The United States survived an onslaught in the first 10 minutes vs. Germany to enter the half tied at 0-0 in good position to advance to the Round of 16. Much of the credit went to goalkeeper Tim Howard, and defenseman Omar Gonzalez.
In the second half, however, the Germans finally broke through with a goal off a Howard save by Thomas Mueller at 55'. The Americans would never find the back of the net, but Portugal's victory over Ghana allowed the United States to advance anyway.
