Andrew Wiggins will not see action for the Canadian men's national basketball team in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, scheduled from July 27 to August 11.
The Golden State Warriors have reportedly denied the forward from joining the international tournament.
"Golden State Warriors playing hardball with veteran they are looking to move. Canadian team opens camp later tonight [June 28]," Raptors insider Doug Smith posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
The 29-year-old forward has been subjected to trade rumors this offseason following inconsistent performances after the Warriors' championship run in 2022, where he was an integral contributor.
After the championship, Wiggins signed a four-year contract extension worth $109 million with the Warriors, but due to undisclosed personal reasons, he only played 37 games in the following campaign, 2022-23.
Wiggins pulling out from Canada was a mutual decision
Team insider Anthony Slater of The Athletic has stated that the decision to withdraw Wiggins from Team Canada was a mutual decision due to an ankle issue that bothered him at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Sportsnet insider Michael Grange claimed that Wiggins was insured and cleared medically by Team Canada, but the Warriors still did not want him to participate in the Olympics as he was on the trading block.
A potential reaggravation of the ankle injury or any other injury could hurt the trade value of the former first-overall pick.
