Today at 4:00 p.m. ET the New York Yankees (26-23) will travel to St. Louis for a three-game interleague set with the Cardinals (28-22) in a matchup that can be live streamed free by clicking this link. Yankees fans can listen to the radio broadcast on 101.9 WFAN FM, while Cards fans may do the same on KMOX 1120. The Yankees will send rookie Chase Whitley (0-0, 1.00 ERA) to the mound while the Cardinals will put Michael Wacha (3-3, 2.54 ERA) on the rubber.
The Yanks and Cards are two of MLB's most important and storied franchises, and this year marks just the third time they've met. "Because of the championships between both teams, and the success that they've had, [it's special]," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I really believe so."
This marks the first time the Yankees will visit the current stadium the Cardinals are playing in, and Mike Matheny is contending with the circus of Derek Jeter's farewell tour. "Overall, I have a lot of respect for what they've been able to do and how they've been able to do it," Matheny said.
"And all the excitement with Jeter, he's somebody I have a great deal of respect for -- for how he's been on that stage this long and has kept such a great reputation, as well as what he's done as a player."
The narrative may be about Jeter and history, but the on-field storyline will be St. Louis' young fireballers according to Girardi. "It's young and it's pretty good. We're going to see three guys who all throw 95, 96 [mph]," Girardi said. "Their pitching is youthful, but they've shown they can be extremely good -- and they were in the World Series last year."
They got lucky when Wacha survived an encounter with a line drive. He left his last start after a liner struck his elbow, but he's clearly well enough to make this start. "Everything feels good, I have all the range of motion and everything that I was looking for," Wacha said. "The arm feels great."
