NBA fans all across the world would love to see LeBron James enter the dunk contest, like the premier players of the past have. However, he has steadfastly refused to do so because he's an "in-game dunker," so the show he put on after practice in Phoenix will have to do.
In the video James can be seen slamming home several jams that would likely win him the contest. "That's rare, very, very rare," James said of the display. "We had a great practice and we felt good. When it stops becoming fun, you should stop playing."
While James is surely a ferocious dunker of the basketball during games, his outburst in Phoenix proved that he can jam the rock in any scenario. Teammate Dwyane Wade shed some light on why he wouldn't participate despite his skills.
"I think if [he] did get in it, people would expect him to jump off an airplane," Wade said. "The expectation is so high that it might be a small letdown as well. The man can fly, but Blake Griffin jumped over cars, so LeBron James has to jump over something else. The window has passed from that standpoint."
A coy James continued to toy with fans with an infuriating reply to the question of how he thinks he'd fare in the dunk contest. "I'd win it," James said. There is no question he would provide and endless supply of juice to an All-Star weekend tradition that has been somewhat lacking in recent years.
"The dunk contest [with James] would be one of the most watched events, besides the Grammys, of the year," Wade said. "I get to see a lot of his dunk contests behind the scenes and I get amazed with some of the things he can do."
Still, this year's crew of dunkers has an elevated Q rating than those of the last few years. The 2014 contestants are headlined by Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, and also include Damian Lillard (Trailblazers), John Wall (Wizards), Terrence Ross (Raptors, defending champion), Harrison Barnes (Warriors), Ben McLemore (Kings).
