NFL pundits can't keep Marcus Mariota away from Chip Kelly.
A pair of former employees of NFL teams wondered aloud whether the Tennessee Titans should consider trading the No. 2 quarterback taken in the 2015 Draft to the San Francisco 49ers to reunite Mariota with his college coach, according to tweets posted on oregonlive.com.
49ers Likely Can't Cut Colin Kaepernick Now Because They'll Owe Him His 2016 Salary
Former Cleveland Browns general manager and current Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage asked whether the Titans, coming off a 5-11 season in 2015, should dangle Mariota to the 49ers and Kelly, who coached Mariota at Oregon.
He asked whether the Titans would consider pullin the trigger for the 49ers' No. 7 pick in this year's draft, plus a first-round selection in 2017.
Chip Kelly's Biggest Task Will Be Role Of Psychologist To Colin Kaepernick
Not sure Mariota will ever be more than a faster Alex Smith. Id think about if I'm Tennessee https://t.co/Gc7e4ExNtt

Former Philadelphia Eagles scout and Fresno State recruiting graduate assistant John Middlekauf added his two cents on whether the trade made sense for the 49ers

Both were taken to task for suggesting that the Titans consider moving the quarterback that threw for 2,818 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.

Tennessee finished with a 3-13 record in 2015, and Mariota's play clearly was one of the few highlights of the season.
Savage never said that the Titans should trade Mariota, but the team does have several areas in need of upgrade for them to contend for a playoff berth.
Kaepernick likely would have to be part of the discussion, per his trade request. The problem is that San Francisco needs a lot of help as well after its 5-11 season in 2015.
But if the Titans thought California's Jared Goff or North Dakota Stats' Carson Wentz offered similar value to Mariota, they almost owe it to their fans to consider such a trade to help them get competitive more quickly.
