Victoria Duval Impresses At U.S. Open At Age 17
"I'm just enjoying every moment I have, in tennis and in life," Duval told The New York Daily News during the U.S. Open in August.
Here are five interesting facts about Duval's amazing life and epic journey into professional tennis.
Serena Williams Lost The Love Of Her Life
1) She Beat Cancer
During the 2014 Wimbledon event, Duval was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma during the second round, but despite the illness and any distractions it brought with it, she still managed to win three more matches before being eliminated from the competition. Duval returned to the U.S. to undergo treatment, and while the long road to recovery came with many frustrations, she was able to announce in September 2014 that she is cancer-free.
2) Sweet Seventeen
Duval entered the U.S. Open for the first time at age 17 in 2013 and she upset 2011 U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur before losing in the second round. She has also competed in Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the French Open.
3) She Has A Distinctly High Voice
There likely isn't anything more adorable out there than a 17-year-old Duval talking about her upset victory over Stosur at the U.S. Open (see video below). The young tennis star's high-pitched, elated voice is something to behold.
4) Growing Up In Haiti
Though she was born in America, Duval spent some of her childhood in Haiti, and it was very adventurous. At age 7, Duval was held up at gunpoint in her aunt's house and robbed, according to ESPNW.
5) Family Life
Duval grew up watching her brothers play in tennis tournaments and eventually took part in them herself. Her parents were both doctors, but she nearly lost her father after an earthquake in Haiti trapped him under rubble at her childhood home. Her father was seriously injured, but eventually recovered. Surgery had to be performed in his backyard.
