Stan Wawrinka's wife has returned his announcement of the couple's decision to separate with an overhead smash.
Tennis.com reported that Wawrinka's wife, Ilham, issued a venom-filled response to his statement about their separation earlier in the week.
Stan Wawrinka announces split from wife his wife after seven years of marriage
Wawrinka, who was routed 6-1, 6-2 in the third round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov last week, dropped to No. 10 in the world, his lowest ranking since 2013. The Guardian suggested that his personal life may have contributed to his struggles in Monte Carlo.
"Stanislas Wawrinka has split with his wife Ilham for the second time, (an) explanation in part, perhaps, for his lackluster performance in failing to defend his Monte Carlo Masters title this week," the Guardian reported.
That comment didn't fly with Ilham Wawrinka, who accused Stan of using their marital woes as an excuse for his subpar tennis.
"No, Stan does not lose matches because of our separation, said to be painful, because it has been already five months since his triumphant return at Davis Cup," she said in French, according to tennis.com. "His decision to leave, for the second time, his family did not stop him from to winning the tournament in Chennai and having more or less, very good results.
"No, trips and tournaments are not the cause of our separation. Besides, other players, ranked higher than him, handle family life very well. His instability, desire to regain his freedom-at all levels-are the source. And I have to admit the repeated fibs and emotional betrayals eventually destroyed entirely the confidence I had in him."
Wawrinka's original announcement didn't raise any red flags and was presented tastefully:
"We have enjoyed 10 fulfilling years, with all the ups and downs that every couple experiences, but sometimes life is more challenging than one would hope," he said in a statement, according to tennis.com. "Ilham and I were both blessed to create a family when our wonderful daughter Alexia was born in 2010. We have always tried to live our lives as a team and as a family, despite the challenges we have faced due to the demands of my career. To my great regret this isn't possible anymore."
But it could be best for Wawrinka not to respond and incite further comment from his wife.
