No. 2 Roger Federer took on 30th-ranked Julien Benneteau, dominating him in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Federer controlled all the action, recording nine aces to Benneteau's one, and posting an 85 percent mark on first serves. He also was a perfect 3-for-3 on break point conversions. He now awaits the winner of No. 15 Gilles Simon and No. 18 Sam Querrey.
No. 3 Rafael Nadal had another shaky start to his second round match with Martin Klizan, dropping the first set for the second time in a row before rallying to a 4-6, 6-3,6-3, 6-3 win. After rain washed away the match yesterday, Nadal said he was slow out of the gates. "I started a bit too defensive," he said. "I improved a little bit during the match."
The seven-time French Open champion is known to be lethal on the clay court, having lost a mere 14 sets in 53 career French Open matches; yet, in 2013, he has lost the first set of each of his first two pairings.
No. 19 John Isner survived a big time scare against American Ryan Harrison. Isner rallied for a win after being down two sets. It was the second time in Isner's career that he had overcome such a large hole.
On the women's side, No. 1 Serena Williams cruised past Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-2, and No. 2 Maria Sharapova demolished Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-4. In a second round surprise, No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki was ousted in straight sets by Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 7-6, 6-3.
