Troy Tulowtizki Yankees Rumors: Mets Trade Dead? Bronx Bombers May Still Seek Derek Jeter Replacement

The New York Yankees dealt for Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius earlier this offseason, a move that was buried by larger ones. Gregorius has a tall task ahead of him though-replacing a legend in Derek Jeter. Recent reports indicate that Yankees brass may be seeking someone else to actually fill that role-Troy Tulowitzki.

According to CBS Sports the Yankees have kicked the tires on the Rockies' star shortstop despite his exceptionally big price tag and injury history. Tulo has missed 222 games combined over the past three seasons, and is owed $20 million through the 2019 season, plus $14 million in 2020.

The Yankees have so far shown an aversion to big contracts this offseason-likely because they already have five players with an average salary of more than $20 million. Still, big ticket players will always be linked to the Yankees because of their deep pockets, and Tulo did attend a regular season game while admitting his idol was Jeter.

Other teams have a greater need for his services though, including the Yanks' crosstown rival Mets. Lately the Mets have been the hottest trade rumor because of their bountiful stock of pitching prospects. Reports say they are pushing starter Dillon Gee and shortstop Ruben Tejada, but the Rockies are more into upper tier prospects like Rafael Montero.

CBS Sports' report says the Rockies are willing to just keep Tulowitzki on board if they don't like the return on prospects, but the real roadblock to a deal with the Mets may be the amount of money Colorado is willing to pitch in to cover Tulowitzki's prohibitive salary.
