Today at 1:08 p.m. ET the Baltimore Orioles' (1-2) rough early slate continues when they kick off a three-game set in Comerica Park with the Detroit Tigers (2-0). Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the hill for the Tigers against Miguel Gonzalez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) and the game can be live streamed by clicking this link. Orioles fans can hear the game on 1090 WBAL, while Tigers fans can find the radio broadcast on 97.1 The Ticket.
Sanchez has always been a high-end starter, but last year he jumped his performance to an ace-like level. "Every year you have to make some goals," Sanchez told the team's official website. "For me, it's getting to 200 innings, get 200 strikeouts, get my 33 starts a year. That's my goal every single year: Control what I can control."
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus raved about Sanchez this spring and said he's primed for another monster season.
"The most impressive thing [about him] is he told me how much weight he's lost since he was with the Marlins," Ausmus said. "I mean, this is a guy who really watches his diet and works out hard, and it's paying dividends in spades on the field."
He's countered by Gonzalez, a young bright spot in Baltimore's rotation that they can see reaching Sanchez's level very soon. Last year he was 11-8 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 28 starts. That followed a 9-4 season in 2012 with a 3.25 ERA in 11 starts.
Baltimore's lineup was mostly tamed by the Boston rotation in the opening series, so Gonzalez might need to toss a gem to get the victory. Orioles slugger Chris Davis hasn't homered yet this year after leading the American League with 53 in 2013. He did get going a bit yesterday though by picking up his first two hits.
He's also historically successful vs. Detroit-in his last five games at Comerica Davis has eight hits, five of them home runs, and 10 RBI.
