The Knicks were demoralized last night by the lowly Lakers, who hung 51 points on the defensively challenged Knickerbockers in the third quarter.
"I thought we came out ready to play," New York coach Mike Woodson said. "I mean, we held them to 14 points in the first quarter, and then that second and third quarter, all hell broke loose. We just didn't have any answer for them from a defensive standpoint."
The sheer mountain of points the Lakers scored on the Knicks was staggering, but allowed Woodson to rest his key players for the fourth quarter, meaning they should be fresh for tonight. Whether that matters anymore or not is up for debate, but there are games left on the schedule and Kings coach Mike Malone remains in game plan mode.
"They're not going to surprise you with what they're doing," Malone said. "You know Carmelo's going to have the ball on the left elbow on an iso, he's going to have the ball, high pick-and-roll, and he's going to have the ball in the post. But now the question is can you stop it?"
New York has been devastated all year long by opposing point guards, so they may dodge a bullet tonight if Kings point guard Isaiah Thomas is unable to play because of a leg contusion. "If he can't play, obviously we'll have Ray McCallum and then we might have to have some point forward with Rudy Gay or somebody else handling the ball at times," Malone said.
Whoever mans the point is likely in for a big night.
