Tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET the No. 14 University of North Carolina Tar Heels (23-7, 13-4 ACC) will conclude their regular season against the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils (23-7, 12-5 ACC) at Cameron Indoor Stadium, continuing the best rivalry in college athletics. Duke is shooting for an 18th undefeated regular season at Cameron Indoor, and might be a good bet to do so. The last time they tasted defeat on their home floor was two years ago...at the hands of the baby blue-clad Tar Heels.
After a rough stretch to begin conference play, UNC has ripped off 12 consecutive victories, including a 74-66 win over Duke at Chapel Hill. They have ridden their tremendous rebounding and Marcus Paige's late-game chops to many of those wins while Duke's shown cracks in the armor.
The Blue Devils fell earlier this week to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, a surprising loss in which Coach Mike Krzyzewski had to skip the postgame presser because of dizziness. "There was a great emotional investment in the game and I think maybe the emotion got the better of him," associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski said.
Perhaps he was thinking about containing Paige again, or dealing with the Heels' slew of big men against his undersized frontcourt. Paige leads the Tar Heels in scoring at 16.9 points per game as well as assists (4.5).
As March Madness closes in UNC head coach Roy Williams is ready to start dominating opponents though, as opposed to winning via comebacks. "I said Saturday to have a really good year you've got to win some games ugly," Williams said. "I'm tired of winning games ugly."
