If Martin Brodeur was suited up for his last game as a member of the New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon, it was a memorable one as the Devils trounced the New York Islanders 6-1 at the Nassau Coliseum. Brodeur, who made 18 saves in the triumph, could be on the trading block for the New Jersey Devils.
According to NJ.com, two members of the Chicago Blackhawks front office attended Thursday's game along with a scout, as well as the assistant general manager of the Minnesota Wild. According to the report, the Blackhawks and Wild are two teams that are interested in working out a deal for the Devils franchise veteran goaltender.
The Devils traded for former Vancouver Canucks goalie Cory Schneider during last year's NHL Draft and he looks to be the goalie of the future for the team, limiting Brodeur's role on the only NHL team he has ever played for.
Amidst rumors that Brodeur wants a trade due to his declining role with the team, the netminder said he wouldn't publicly tell the media that he wants a trade or where he wants to go.
"Oh, no. It's not going to be like that. I don't think so, anyway," Brodeur told The Newark Star-Ledger. "It's nobody else's business but mine as for the direction I want to go. It's been tough because you go through ups and downs. The more questions I'm asked, sometimes my answers change. That's why in the last few weeks I've been more quiet about it. It's on purpose, because I want to make sure my decision is an educated decision and there are no influences from the outside.
Brodeur, 41, is 14-11-4 through 29 games with the team this year with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. Brodeur was selected by the Devils in the first round of the 1990 NHL Draft as the 20th overall pick, and has spent his entire career with the team.
Now, the veteran goaltender could be on the move before the 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline on Wednesday.
Brodeur is 683-391-152 through 1,249 games with the Devils with a career 2.24 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Brodeur holds the record for regular season wins from a goalie.
Brodeur is a nine-time All-Star and four-time Vezina Trophy winner while guiding the Devils to three Stanley Cup championships. It's been a storybook career for Brodeur, but the New Jersey chapter may come to an end by Wednesday.
