LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger suffered a torn ACL and an MCL sprain during the Tigers 31-27 victory over Arkansas last week after a hit on his left knee in the fourth quarter, multiple sources report.
According to ESPN, Mettenberger was hit on the left knee during the final quarter by Arkansas defensive tackle Byran Jones and reports indicate that the injury is a torn ACL and MCL sprain. The senior quarterback was wearing a brace on the knee as a precautionary measure, but the knee bent back after the hit, causing the injury.
Mettenberger can't have surgery until the sprain on the MCL heals, according to ESPN, and it is expected to take two weeks for the MCL to fully heal before Mettenberger can undergo surgery on his torn ACL.
The team believes that Mettenberger may be available around March for LSU's pro day if no set-backs arise with the surgery.
ESPN reports that prior to the injury, Mettenberger was thought to be no worse than a mid-first round pick in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft but it's unknown if the injury will change anything.
Backup quarterback Anthony Jennings is expected to start for LSU (9-3, 5-3 SEC) in their bowl appearance after taking over in the fourth quarter last week when Mettenberger went out with an injury.
According to ESPN, LSU's sports information director Michael Bonnette tweeted Tuesday night that the school will release an update on the senior quarterback sometime Wednesday.
Mettenberger was 192-for-296 (64.9%) for 3,082 yards with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season.
