Andy Murray Was Right To Miss Davis Cup Says Leon Smith

Andy Murray will miss the Great Britain's tie against Canada in the first round of Davis Cup starting this weekend at Ottawa. Leon Smith who will be leading the team believes the decision made by Murray to rest as the right thing.

Andy Murray opted to stay out for the initial four-man squad. He can join at the later stage if he wants to but in the end, Murray stood by his decision to take rest and stay away from the court. Smith backed Murray by saying that it is the right decision taken by him.

"I spent time with [Murray] in Miami during December, talking about it pretty openly, so we always knew it was going to be a challenging one for him to play" Smith told and added "It's the right thing for him to do what he's doing; stay at home, get some rest after what was an unbelievable three or four months for him, and focus on these four here, who are really good players" as reported by ESPN.

So without Andy Murray in their team, the player who will be representing Britain for the match against Canada include Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot. Milos Raonic has withdrawn because of the adductor strain he suffered at Australian Open.

Leon Smith thinks that he has got a bunch of experienced players and they are very much used to the environment of Davis Cup as they have been its part for many times in past. Evans just surpassed Edwards in the rankings as reported in Telegraph.

Evans will play on Friday when the tie will start at 8 pm GMT against Denis Shapovalov who is just 17 years old reigning junior Wimbledon champion. On the other hand, Edmund will be against Vasek Pospisil who looks weak on confidence from last year or so.

Murray will be watching us play, says Smith. "Andy will be watching. I'm sure he will ping some messages back and forwards. I might get to see them at some point, although I'm not allowed a phone on the court of course."
