Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles are set to collide at Backlash.
The "Lunatic Fringe" will go one-on-one with the "Phenomenal One" at the first "SmackDown Live" exclusive show live from the Richmond Coliseum in Virginia on Sept. 11.
There have been many valid complaints about Ambrose's run as champion and though it was great to see the WWE finally believe in him by giving him the richest prize in the game at Money in the Bank back in June, there have been some glaring issues with his character.
Ambrose's promos have left a lot to be desired as of late and his appearance on the "Stone Cold" Steve Austin podcast also was very odd. Perhaps its time for the WWE to change things up to make things a little more interesting.
Given the way Styles has been having Match of the Year candidates, it wouldn't be a bad idea to put the belt on him. The WWE could also shake things up by having Ambrose turn heel at the event.
Having the reigning champion turn into an unpredictable, unhinged character could help improve his microphone work. If the WWE kept the title on him as a heel, it could make "SmackDown Live" even better going forward.
There is a severe lack of top heels on the show as aside from Styles and Bray Wyatt, so the WWE turning Ambrose heel could add a whole new element to the show. There are plenty of top babyfaces, including Ambrose, John Cena and Randy Orton.
There is always the possibility the WWE could pull of the rare double switch at Backlash, a move that was perfected when "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Bret Hart swapped babyface and heel roles at WrestleMania 13 in 1997.
Styles had some rough patches when he first became a heel, but he has improved in recent months during his feud with Cena. However, the WWE could have him become a top babyface again now that he's certainly come into his own in the squared circle.
If the WWE has Ambrose go crazy on Styles, turning him into a villain, it could make for a very interesting turn of events at the first "SmackDown Live" exclusive event.
