Chip Kelly Rumors: Colin Kaepernick Reason 49ers Chose Him Over Mike Shanahan [VIDEO]

Colin Kaepernick may have had a say in the 49ers coaching search, after all. A pretty major say.

Kaepernick is the reason Chip Kelly is coaching the 49ers, rather than Mike Shanahan, according to Bleacher Report's Jason Cole.

Chip Kelly May Have Interest In Bringing In Sam Bradford To 49ers

If true, the logic explain why the 49ers have fallen so quickly to the bottom of the NFC West.

Per Cole: "As the San Francisco 49ers coach search came to an end, and the team was down to deciding between Chip Kelly and Mike Shanahan as their final candidates, a lot of momentum was there for Mike Shanahan. People in fact were calling on his behalf, including such former 49ers as Ronnie Lott and Steve Young. But the deciding factor for the 49ers was that they believe that Shanahan did not want to keep Colin Kaepernick as a quarterback, and wanted to move on. Ultimately they believed that Shanahan wanted to draft a quarterback in the first round with their high pick that they have.

"All of that led to the 49ers wanting to keep Kaepernick, because ownership believes that he can be salvaged."

LeSean McCoy: Chip Kelly Hire In San Francisco Could Work

Up until Cole's report, the San Francisco brass made it seem as if their star-crossed quarterback was the furthest thing from their minds.

"If the 49ers hired Chip Kelly to resurrect Colin Kaepernick's career, no one has filled in the embattled quarterback of that plan," the San Jose Mercury News reported after Kelly's hire last week. "Kaepernick is in Vail, Colorado, and was having physical therapy done on his left shoulder when news broke Thursday of Kelly's hiring.

"Neither Kelly nor the 49ers reached out to Kaepernick during the 11-day coaching search."

If that doesn't sound like a contradiction from Cole's report, the Mercury News explained during the time that the 49ers coaching search was active how it was the team's upper management that threw Kaepernick under the bus this season.

"Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson will want a truthful explanation of the 49ers' leaks and disparagement of Kaepernick, which, by the way, probably won't make York, Baalke and Paraag Marathe look too good.

"Former Eagles coach Chip Kelly will wonder why 49ers management would go so far out of its way to disparage the most talented QB on its roster."

If the 49ers were worried about Kaepernick, who will cost the team some $14 million if he remains on the roster after April 1, they wouldn't have fired Jim Harbaugh.

It seems odd that San Francisco's management would put their trust in a quarterback that has been in a tailspin the last two seasons over a veteran coach who has won Super Bowls with an elite quarterback.
