For the first time since 1992, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be defended in the 30-man Royal Rumble Match.
WWE Can Still Save WrestleMania Despite Injuries
The odds are stacked against title-holder Roman Reigns, as he has to overcome 29 other men to retain his gold. Though only 10 of the 30 Superstars have been announced thus far for the event, the match is always full of surprises and there are several candidates who could conceivably escape Orlando, Fla. with the WWE's richest prize on Jan. 24.
Here are five possible Superstars who could become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion at the Royal Rumble.
Making Rumble Match For WWE Title Is A Mistake
1) Brock Lesnar
Though not officially in the Rumble Match, "The Beast" is already being advertised for it by the WWE. It's likely he'll officially announce he's entering the battle when he returns to television Monday on RAW. Lesnar rarely loses these days in the WWE, and if he enters the fray, it's hard to imagine anyone eliminating him. Paul Heyman's client is the odds on favorite to win it all and recapture a title he lost without ever getting pinned.
2) Chris Jericho
"Y2J" made a surprising return on RAW last week and announced that he'll be entering the elimination match. He then revealed on his podcast that he'll be having a lengthy stay in the WWE and has huge plans. Jericho is already a four-time World Champion and out of the 10 Superstars announced for the bout, he's the most likely one to emerge victorious.
3) The Undertaker
The career of "The Deadman" is winding down, but he could have one final moment of glory left in him as a surprise entrant. There has been a lot of speculation that 'Taker will be retiring soon, but the "Demon from Death Valley" could be given one more run with the biggest prize in the WWE on his way out heading into WrestleMania.
4) Sheamus
The "Celtic Warrior" isn't the most popular choice to escape the Rumble Match with the belt, but he is always a likely candidate. It's no secret that Triple H is huge on Sheamus and loves to push him. With Sheamus' last title reign lasting just more than three weeks, the WWE could give him a legitimate run.
5) Randy Orton
"The Viper" is reportedly sidelined for a while due to myriad injuries, but the WWE has pulled off some swerves before. In 2008, it seemed like John Cena was going to miss WrestleMania, but he ended up making a surprise return at the Royal Rumble and winning it all. It may be a long shot, but the same could happen for Orton if he is healthier than the WWE has let on.
