Michael Phelps Comeback? U.S. Olympic Swimmer's Tweet Leads To Speculation On Possible 2016 Return To Rio Games [PHOTO]

In the digital age, even the most subtle hints can lead to speculation, and Michael Phelps latest comments on Twitter have certainly caused a stir in the swimming world and also renewed the hopes that perhaps the retired swimmer may be planning on a return for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Phelps tweeted the following on Sunday, causing the swimming world to once again clamor about whether or not a comeback is in the works:

The 22-time Olympic medalist (18 gold) retired following the 2012 Games in London, but rumors have circulated that he could be leaning towards a return, despite the Maryland native denying any reports as to him making a return to the pool in Rio.

The question now remains of whether or not this "new start" he discussed Sunday has anything to do with swimming at all.

No matter what happens, Phelps' cryptic Twitter message has excited many fans and supporters around the country and the world, and they reflect his attitude of not looking too far ahead.

Phelps is only 28-years-old, so he should still have plenty left in the tank should he decide to return. He told The Associated Press earlier this summer that he's not sure if he'd return to the pool in the Olympics and hadn't made a decision regarding it.

"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Phelps told The Associated Press earlier this summer. "I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow."

Phelps has continued to stay vague about his future throughout this summer amid heavy speculation and hope that he'll return to active competition at the Rio Games.

"I don't know. We're in 2013," Phelps told AP earlier this summer about possibly coming out of retirement in 2016. "There's nothing in the works."

While there were no plans of a return earlier in the summer and Phelps hasn't opted to talk openly about it, his cryptic tweet at least leaves the door open for a possible return.

And even if his Tweet, which has received 376 retweets and counting, doesn't mean a comeback is imminent, it would appear as though Phelps is having fun stringing everyone along.
