Starlin Castro's Mental Lapse [VIDEO]: Benched for Not Paying Attention in Field During Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals Game

Chicago Cubs' shortstop Starlin Castro can't count to three. Which meant he was out again.

During the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Castro lost track of how many outs were recorded with his team in the field and cost his team a run.

The gaffe earned him the rest of the day off.

According to Larry Brown Sports, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. St. Louis batter Matt Carpenter hit a fly ball to shallow left field. Left fielder Junior Lake was running in, and Castro was running out on the ball.

Castro waived off Lake and jogged a couple of steps toward the dugout.

Cardinals runner John Jay, who was on third base, tagged up and saw Castro take a couple of steps and took off for home. He beat Castro's throw to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum removed Castro from the game in the sixth inning, moving Donny Murphy from third base to shortstop and inserting Cody Ransom to play third base.

According to Larry Brown Sports, Castro's mental struggles have been made public at least two other times in the past two years.

In 2012, the Cubs shortstop lost track of the outs in the fifth inning of a game against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants had a runner on first when batter Brandon Crawford hit a grounder to Chicago second baseman Darwin Barney.

Barney flipped to Castro for the force, but Castro didn't throw to first for the double play. Both Sveum and pitcher Jeff Samardzija both expressed their frustration to Castro after the game.

And in 2011, ESPN cameras caught Castro with his back turned to the batter during a pitch on a Sunday night game, and he was given a "mental day off" the next day by then-manager Mike Quade.
