Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux underwent surgery at Ottawa Civic Hospital Thursday on his right index finger and is expected to recover within 5-6 weeks.
Reports indicate that Giroux hurt the finger while golfing in Ottawa.
"Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger," general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement earlier this week, according to NHL.com. "Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger. He is expected to have a full recovery in 5-6 weeks."
Giroux signed an eight-year $66.2 million contract extension in July, and the 25-year-old had 13 goals and 34 assists last year for a total of 47 points in the 48 game lockout-shortened season. A year before, Giroux scored a career-high 28 goals and was third in the NHL with 93 points.
Giroux, who had a neck injury last year while playing in Germany during the lockout, has only missed five games since becoming a regular in 2009 and has played with the Flyers since 2007.
The Flyers training camp opens Sept. 12. Barring any setbacks, Giroux should be back in time to face the Toronto Maple Leafs at Wells Fargo Center when the season opens on Oct. 2.
"I think I'll really be able to get back to doing things in 2-to-3 weeks," Giroux told the newspaper. "I will be able to skate, and get in skating shape, but I won't be able to be lifting any weights for a while."
Giroux noted that the injury is "more frustrating than you even know," as he will miss Canada's pre-Olympic camp that will take place between Aug. 25-28 in Calgary.
The Flyers had a subpar year last season, going 23-22-3 and missing the playoffs with a fourth place finish in the Atlantic Division.
Giroux is hopeful to get back to the Flyers in time for opening night and help the team get back in the playoff picture.
