Russell Wilson Contract Update: Seattle Fans Start Fund To Raise $5 Million To Pay QB [VIDEO]

A poll in the state of Washington last week gave Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson a near perfect score for favorability.

Now Seahawks fans are hoping to put a dollar figure to that popularity.

Russell Wilson scheduled to be the 46th highest paid quarterback in the NFL in 2015?

Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard is reporting that Seattle fans are coming together to help the Seahawks in their contract negotiations with the fourth-year quarterback and make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

The fan group has started a "GoFundMe" campaign that is asking Seahawks fans to generate $5 million to pay the quarterback that has guided the franchise to three consecutive playoff appearances, two consecutive Super Bowl appearances and the Super Bowl XLVIII victory.

According to Extra Mustard, a fan by the name of Tim Pennoyer has started the fund to help the Seahawks keep enough cap space to retain its other players while paying Wilson what he thinks he deserves.

In the event that Wilson re-signs and turns down the fund's money, Pennoyer said he plans to donate a portion of the money generated to The Seattle Children's Hospital, which the GoFundMe.com website says is one of Wilson's favorite charities.

But a disclaimer exists for those who donate:

"In the event that the Wilson doesn't (accept) the paycheck from his beloved 12s, a portion of the money will be donated to one of Russell Wilson's favorite causes -- The Seattle Children's Hospital. Additionally, and not limited to, funds may be used to design and execute a token of appreciation to Russell Wilson for his current and/or future (participation) in the Seahawks organization. All donated funds are to be used at the sole discretion of the campaign manager and subject to (unforeseen) limitations.

The effort had raised $1,299 at the end of Monday night, according to the GoFundMe website. The website is asking fans to donate $12 each with the hashtag #12sgiving12.

Wilson is seeking a contract that makes him one of the league's highest-paid quarterback and guarantees a large portion of the money. The Seahawks reportedly are throwing out a four-year extension worth in the neighborhood of $80 million, but Wilson wants more years, and it is not known how much of that $80 million would be guaranteed.

And while the fans' gesture is noble, it is also amusing because Seahawks owner Paul Allen is worth $17.6 billion, SportsNaut reports.
