Jahvid Best, a slight 24-year-old speed demon of a running back has been released by the Detroit Lions, according to reports. Best was a former first-round pick of the Lions in 2010, but his career appears to have been cut short by a severe concussion.
Best was drafted as an ideal running back for the Lions' high-octane, pass-heavy approach. He was quick, elusive, and possessed the speed of a deep-threat wide receiver. In his rookie season Best rand 151 times for 555 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 58 passes for 487 yards and two more scores.
He was on pace to eclipse those numbers in 2011 when he sustained a concussion he has yet to return from. He began 2012 on the physically unable to perform list after experiencing symptoms throughout training camp. After his mandatory six weeks on the PUP list passed by, his symptoms remained, and Detroit shut him down for the rest of the season.
Now, with Reggie Bush in the backfield, Best has sadly become expendable. Upon releasing Best, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew heaped kind words upon the former first-rounder:
"Jahvid is as fine a person and professional as I have ever worked with. He was the consummate teammate and always did everything asked of him. We wish Jahvid the very best in all his future endeavors and have no doubt that he will be successful in whatever path he chooses."
Best expressed gratitude to the Lions organization for drafting him via a statement put out by the Lions.
"I want to thank the Detroit Lions organization for drafting me and giving me an opportunity to fulfill my dream and play in the National Football League. My time as a member of the Lions was a very special time in my life. My teammates, the members of the organization, the Lions fans and the people of Detroit will hold a special place in my heart. I'll always be a Lion."
