Kate Upton, a two-time Sports Illustrated cover model, has been busy of late. Today, she tweeted out a birthday message that can be construed as a shot at Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander, with whom she has been romantically linked.
Upton's tweet, which read "Happy birthday to one of my favorite people ever @frankviola3 !!!" Attached to the message was an internet meme reading, "Happy birthday to a friend of a friend who I now like more than the original friend."
Frank Viola III, is one of Verlander's best friends, and seems to have continued some kind of relationship with Upton since her ties with Verlander have seemingly soured. It's important to note that the pitcher and model have never publicly confirmed they ever dated.
Perhaps this apparent acrimony has been clouding Verlander on the mound, because his performance has waned in 2013 after a Cy Young and MVP 2011 campaign, followed up by a dominant 2012.
This season, Verlander is downright struggling by his standards; his record is 8-5, and he carries a 3.72 ERA and 1.348 WHIP. In 15 starts this season Verlander has given up four or more runs four times, something he did last season only seven times in 33 starts.
In other Upton news, video of Upton topless atop a horse has hit the web, and will surely jam up search engines for hours. Upton's breast baring happened during a modeling shoot; she attempted to cover up with her hands at first, but eventually realized she was fighting a losing battle.

While the single, modeling Upton seems to be doing just fine, what are the hopes of Verlander returning to form?
Well, Verlander's strikeouts per nine innings (10.37) are actually at a career high, while his FIP, an advanced metric that measures what a pitcher's ERA should be adjusting for defense is a 2.81, pointing toward a big-time second half.
