Joe Torre is considered a hero in Yankee history, having presided over four World Series championships from 1996 to 2007, but his daughter Cristina actually saved a life in Brooklyn last night.
A 1-year-old baby had taken a spill off the fire escape of a second-floor Brooklyn apartment when the quick-thinking Cristina made a life-saving catch that dwarfed even the biggest moments on a baseball diamond.
Joe Torre, who is now serving as Major League Baseball's executive vice president of baseball operations released a statement commenting on his daughter's heroic grab. "I am very proud of my daughter Cristina's actions today during an incident in Brooklyn involving a small child. Fortunately for that child she was in the right place at the right time to lend a hand."
The child's parents, Sam Miller, 23, and Tiffany Demitro, 24, were arrested and charged with "reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17." Since they were in police custody, the parents were unable to comment on the matter.
In his 12 years as Yankees manager, Torre piled up 1,173 wins and just 765 losses. Under his watch the Bronx Bombers won six American League pennants and marched down the Canyon of Heroes in four tickertape parades. His career winning percentage with the Yanks was 60.5 percent.
In Torre's three other managerial spots, he was far less successful. Before landing with the Yankees, Torre managed the New York Mets for five years, and the Atlanta Braves for three seasons, failing to go .500 with either club.
After his breakup with the Yankees, Torre headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers where he led them to a 259-227 record in three seasons at the helm.
Torre was also an eight-time All-Star selection and 1971 National League MVP. In his MVP season Torre batted .363 with 24 home runs and a whopping 137 RBI.
