Hiroki Kuroda pitched 6.2 innings of eight-hit, two run ball against the Dodgers, before Preston Claiborne nearly coughed up the lead for the Yanks in the eighth inning by surrendering a two-run blast to Hanley Ramirez.
Ramirez, who served as the designated hitter in the American League park was 4-for-4 on the afternoon, smacking the late homer and driving in two runs. David Robertson came in after Claiborne, walking two batters before escaping a jam.
In the ninth inning, the living legend Mariano Rivera slammed the door shut on Los Angeles, striking out rookie sensation Yasiel Puig to end the game.
In Game 2, the Dodgers will send left-hander Chris Capuano (1-4, 5.45 ERA) to the rubber against Phil Hughes (3-5, 4.89 ERA), who was originally slated to pitch last night. Capuano has been shaky in his last two starts, throwing a combined 10.2 innings and giving up eight runs on 12 hits, while striking out six and walking seven.
Hughes has not been a model of consistency either in 2013, showing a complete lack of control in his last start against the Oakland A's, walking five batters in 4.2 innings and giving up three runs while striking out just three batters.
The Yankees got a hit from Robinson Cano in the first game, and are hoping he can kick his offense into high gear with Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis back on the disabled list. Cano's average has dipped to .278 on the season, and he has hit .253 with just three homers and nine RBI in the last 28 days.
