Last night, facing the specter of two straight losses to the worst team in the National League, Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt rescued his NL West-leading club with a towering blast to dead center field that lifted Arizona to a 2-1 win.

Goldschmidt's homer ended a four-game losing skein in which he was 2-for-13. "Any time it's a walkoff, whether it's you or one of the other guys, it's fun," Goldschmidt said, but there was no doubting he was glad it was him.

The Diamondbacks needed the win, because today's game will be no walk in the park. The Marlins are sending 20-year-old rookie right-hander Jose Fernandez (4-3, 3.11 ERA) to the hill, who is 2-0 in the month of June. In his last outing, a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, Fernandez hurled seven innings of three-run ball that included 10 strikeouts and only two walks. That start marked the first time this year he had topped 100 pitches.

He will face Arizona right-hander Trevor Cahill (3-8, 3.96 ERA) who, after a brilliant start to the season, has suffered through a rocky June. He's gone 14.1 innings in his last three starts combined, surrendering 16 earned runs.

Most of that damage came in the first two starts of the month though. His last start was a 5.2-inning effort in which he set down 10 batters on strikes and allowed two runs but wound up with a loss.
