The Tennessee Titans do not appear to think their quarterback situation is one that needs to be addressed immediately. Despite being in prime position in the upcoming draft to take one of two highly rated passers, the Nashville Tennessean is reporting that the Titans still think highly of 2014 fifth-rounder Zach Mettenberger.
"We like Zach, and I think Zach has the tools to play and start in the league," Titans general manager Ruston Webster said. "We've said all along that this is a part of this process, and we have to do our due diligence all the way through. Zach knows we are going to do that, and this is just kind of part of it.
"These guys are part of the evaluation process along with other positions. And we'll take a good look at them."
Last year Mettenberger battled injuries, and threw eight touchdowns vs. seven interceptions in seven games (six starts). The Tampa Bay Buccaneers pick first, and are widely speculated to keep 2013 Heisman winner Jameis Winston in the state of Florida by drafting him first overall. If so, and the Titans pass on Oregon Heisman winner Marcus Mariota at No. 2, where could the National Championship runner-up land?
New York Jets, No. 6
After Tennessee are a slew of teams that struggled last season, but aren't in a position to sink a Top 10 pick into the quarterback position The Jets absolutely have a need at that position, and it is hard to see them passing up a talent such as Mariota's if he falls that far. The Jets have plenty of holes on this roster outside of defensive line and running back, but the quarterback is the head of the snake.
St. Louis Rams, No. 10
This would be a no-brainer. The Rams could bring back injury-prone veteran Sam Bradford, but he's played in just seven games over the last two seasons and has never led the Rams to a winning record when healthy. At this point Bradford is a high-upside lottery ticket, while Mariota could be a franchise-changing player. The Rams desperately need a quarterback too-the rest of the roster was loaded enough for the Rams to finish 6-10 while cycling through career backup Shaun Hill, and undrafted free agent Austin Davis.
Philadelphia Eagles, TBD
The Eagles don't pick until No. 20, but to get Mariota they'd likely have to trade up. Don't count that out! Mariota threw 42 touchdowns and four interceptions last season at Oregon, running an offense that was created by current Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. This was the man that brought Mariota to the Oregon Ducks, and he would provide Philadelphia's run-heavy offense with the mobility at quarterback that Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez have lacked so far.
