WWE Rumors: 5 Memorable Things From 1999's St. Valentine's Day Massacre Event 16 Years Later [VIDEOS]

Valentine's Day is known as a day of love, but in 1999 with the WWE at the height of its popularity with the famed Attitude Era in full swing, there was anything but love shared on Feb. 14.

That year, Valentine's Day happened to fall on a Sunday, meaning the WWE could use the holiday as a gimmick for its pay-per-view, The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, which emanated live from The Pyramid in Memphis and was a play on the 1929 mob gang murders in Chicago.

This event was sandwiched in between the ill-perceived Royal Rumble of that year and the upcoming huge WrestleMania XV event.

The main storylines entering the evening included the ongoing battle between Vince McMahon and The Corporations' main enemy "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and the continued feud between surprise underdog WWE Champion Mankind and "The Corporate Challenger" The Rock.

Other interweaving storylines included The Corporations' long-running feud with The Ministry of Darkness and D-Generation X, with Chyna having turned heel at this point.

On this, Valentine's Day 2015, we go back 16 years ago to 1999 and look at five of the most memorable happenings at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

5) Never Forget the Name of...Bluedust: Goldust's relationship with the Blue Meanie hit a rough patch in February 1999 and the two bizarre brutes set out to settle the score at St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

The Meanie came out dressed as "Bluedust" mimicking the entrance and mannerisms of the Goldust character. The match wasn't much at all, as Goldust quickly thwarted off his Blue opponent in just over three minutes.

Following this, the Blue Meanie was right back at the side of Goldust.

4) SLAP ME!: Fittingly, the Intercontinental Championship bout at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre involved a love story -- though typical of the Attitude Era it had many wrinkles.

Ken Shamrock's kayfabe sister Ryan Shamrock emerged on the scene and instantly became a target of Val Venis, who had the character of being an adult film star.

Venis wanted the beautiful Ryan to be in his next work and Ken, being the older brother, was livid and wanted to beat the crap out of Venis.

Adding an extra layer, Billy Gunn, who also had his problems with both competitors, was named the guest referee.

During one part in the match, Ken got mad at his sister's involvement and began to berate her on the outside. The camera was in tight on them and you can hear clear as day Shamrock yell, "Slap me," to direct Ryan -- a newcomer to wrestling -- in what to do.

Ryan obliged, leading to Ken flipping out as though he was surprised. As for the match, Venis won the title from Shamrock after Gunn delivered a fast count.

3) Rollin' on The River: The Hardcore Championship bout between Hardcore Holly and Al Snow spilled all over the place at this event -- including into the Mississippi River.

Holly and Snow went all out during this match, starting in the ring and eventually spilling to the mat outside and to the backstage area.

After that, they went outside of the arena and continued to fight. The unbelievable brawl then saw the two end up fighting for a brief moment in the Mississippi River.

In the end, Holly wrapped Snow up in a chain fence on the banks of the river, pinning him and winning the title.

2) Double Knockout: The next chapter in the Mankind vs. Rock storyline of early 1999 saw the two combatants battle in a Last Man Standing Match.

Coming off of an I Quit Match at the Royal Rumble and an Empty Arena Match during halftime of the Super Bowl, the two looked to continue to upstage themselves on Valentine's Night in 1999.

With both men putting each other through hell with the use of steel chairs and announce tables, neither of them would stay down for the 10 count.

Eventually, the two collided with each other while holding steel chairs and neither man could answer the 10 count. As a result of this, the barbaric match was a draw and Mankind retained the WWE Championship.

1) The Big Show's Debut, A 'Stone Cold' Stunner: After the WWE inexplicably made Vince McMahon win the Royal Rumble Match in January 1999, the WWE had to do something to get out of the WrestleMania XV main event being Vince McMahon vs. the WWE Champion.

Thus, McMahon's bloody valentine for this night was his chief rival in "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as the two battled in a Steel Cage Match with the No. 1 contender shot for WrestleMania XV up in the air.

Austin and McMahon beat the hell out of each other in a main event that lasted only just under eight minutes, but still featured some memorable moments.

Before the match could even start, the two brawled on the outside and through the crowd, ending with McMahon taking a nasty looking bump through the announce table back-first.

Another hilarious moment when the match actually started saw a bloody, beaten and battered McMahon flip Austin the middle finger as he was escaping the cage. Rather than get the easy win, Austin couldn't help himself and came back in to continue to stomp a mudhole in his boss and walk it dry.

The end of this match saw The Big Show, then known by his real name of Paul Wight, make his WWE debut by emerging through the canvas.

Show attempted to throw Austin into the cage to hurt him and help McMahon win, but when he did, the cage came loose and swung outwardly, allowing Austin to touch the floor.

It was not a happy Valentine's Day for McMahon, as Austin won the match and the right to go to WrestleMania XV, where he one again became WWE Champion.

Valentine's Day 1999 was a memorable one for the WWE as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre set the stage for WrestleMania XV.
