Coffee Poisoning: Houston Doctor Spikes Boyfriend's Drink With Chemical Used In Antifreeze

A prominent Houston oncologist is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly spiking her boyfriend's coffee with a chemical used in antifreeze, according to reports.

Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, the breast cancer doctor in question, was charged last week with aggravated assault for poisoning the drink of Dr. George Blumenschein, a co-worker and lung specialist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Blumenschein focused on cancer of the lung, head and neck.

According to reports, the chemical Gonzalez-Angulo slipped into his coffee caused his kidneys to stop working. Blumenschein is reportedly still being treated for his current condition.

Derek Hollingsworth, Gonzalez-Angulo's lawyer, is staunchly maintaining his client's innocence. "She is a distinguished citizen and scientist, and these allegations are totally inconsistent with her personal and professional life," Hollingsworth told the Houston Chronicle.

As Blumenschein described his plight, he sipped his coffee and complained that it tasted sweet. Gonzalez-Angulo claimed she used Splenda in it, and implored him to finish. He drank his cup and was served another; a few hours later symptoms of his poisoning surfaced.

His speech became slurred, he lost his balance and showed motor skill deterioration, and eventually needed to go on dialysis. Doctors say he showed depression in his central nervous system, "cardiopulmonary complications" and the loss of kidney function.

A toxicology report determined Blumenschein's condition was "more likely than not" caused by ethylene glycol poisoning. Investigators say that ethylene glycol is a substance readily available to Gonzalez-Angulo, and is present in all of her laboratories.

After being arrested and charged Gonzalez-Angulo is free on $50,000 bail. In the police report, her connection to Blumenschein is categorized as a "casual sexual relationship." She has been with the Anderson Center since 2003.

Blumenschein had been working at the University of Texas since 2000.
