Danny "Swift" Garcia didn't have a great 2014 despite going 2-0. He won a controversial split decision over unheralded veteran Mauricio Herrera in Puerto Rico in March, then followed it up with a vicious knockout vs. a woefully overmatched Rod Salka in August.
To rebuild the momentum Garcia had gained when he upset Lucas Matthysse in September of 2013 Garcia will have to step up his competition. While the fight many speculated would be next for him is a unification bout vs. Lamont Peterson, another challenger has made it known he'd like to rumble-Jessie Vargas.
After a thorough November win over Antonio DeMarco in November the undefeated Vargas is seeking out bigger fights to increase his profile.
"I would love that fight, I think it's a great matchup," Vargas said of a Garcia fight. "I think we have a lot of great fights that can be made, that being one of them.
"He's an undefeated fighter, I'm an undefeated fighter, I think it would be a great fight and I would love for it to happen. Now Golden Boy and Top Rank are working together so it's a fight that could possibly happen in the near future."
At 26-0-0 with nine knockouts Vargas has shown good boxing ability, but very little power against lower-level opposition. His more recent fights have come against tough, but limited fighters and his inability to finish them hurts his marketability. That is why Vargas is seeking out names such as Garcia and Manny Pacquiao.
"We just have to wait and see. Right now we don't have any fight scheduled so everything is open," Vargas said. "We just have to wait and see. I know my promoter Bob Arum and my manager are working on something now. I believe that fight could definitely happen."
