Today at 4:25 p.m. ET, the Kansas City Chiefs (2-2) and San Francisco 49ers (2-2) take the field at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. for NFL Week 5 action. The game can be live streamed here. Kansas City has won two straight games and is coming off of an impressive 41-14 win over the reeling New England Patriots while San Francisco comes in on the heels of a 26-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles that snapped a two-game skid.
Alex Smith faces his old team and will look to guide the Chiefs to their first win in San Francisco in 43 years. Colin Kaepernick, who wrested 49ers starting the job away from Smith in 2012 and eventually led the 49ers to their first Super Bowl appearance in 18 years, had high praise for his former mentor.
"One of the classiest people I've ever been around, just an all-around great guy. I don't think anyone could have handled it any better than he did," Kaepernick told ESPN. "He definitely made things go a lot smoother."
Smith is 84-for-128 this season for 891 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions while Kaepernick has gone 83-for-124 for 912 yards with six touchdown passes and four picks.
While this matchup may jog up negative memories, Smith is taking it in stride.
"No bitterness at all," Smith, who has six touchdown passes in his last two games and no picks since Week 1, said of his return, according to ESPN. "What happened there the end of the [2012] year, losing my job, you get to that point and I say this a lot, worrying about anything that was outside your control and dwelling on any of that stuff is only going to have a negative impact."
Kaepernick has faced a lot of criticism, and he could be without tight end Vernon Davis (back) this week. Kaepernick's best weapon in the air thus far this season is wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who has a team-best 231 receiving yards on 21 catches but has failed to reach the end zone.
It is likely San Francisco will give Frank Gore a heavy work load this week after he rushed for a season-high 119 yards last week. Gore has 59 carries for 258 yards and a touchdown on the season.
The Chiefs respond with a duel running back threat in Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis. Charles, who missed time with injury, has 27 carries for 115 yards and reached the end zone once while Davis leads the team with 321 yards on the ground off of 71 attempts and has added three scores.
The Chiefs look for their third straight win while the 49ers hope to spoil Smith's return to San Francisco when these teams collide in NFL Week 5 action this afternoon at Levi's Stadium.
