Rex Ryan gets extension

Ryan's declaration comes after veteran quarterback Michael Vick recently told reporters the Jets had no such issue and he expected second-year signal-caller Geno Smith to the the team's opening day starter.

Some immediately speculated that the veteran Vick was simply trying to be a good teammate and show his support for the 23-year-old Smith. And now Ryan too appears to be intent on taking a wait-and-see attitude before committing to either quarterback.

The Jets acquired the 34-year-old Vick earlier this offseason, hoping to push the young Smith who despite showing flashes last season still through nearly as interceptions as he did touchdowns.

Rex Ryan returning for Jets?

Already this offseason, Vick has raved that he's convinced the Jets roster is talented enough to win a Super Bowl, particularly with him leading the offense.

"I just feel like I can help any football team, any organization, particularly this football team, get to a Super Bowl," he recently told the New York Daily News. "It's tough at this stage of my career because I still feel like I'm a fairly young player and I can still keep up. People make it seem like I'm getting older and things are not the same. I beg to differ."

The Jets have also added veteran running back Chris Johnson and wide receiver Eric Decker this offseason.
