Baltimore Ravens' wide receiver and star kick returner Jacoby Jones will be on the twelfth season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars, according to the Associated Press. He was the first new contestant announced during the Academy Awards last night. Jones is known for his creative moves during touchdown celebrations.
Jones starred for the top-ranked special teams unit in the NFL last year, returning two kickoffs for scores and a punt return in the regular season. Jones also kicked off the second half of the Super Bowl 108 yards for the longest touchdown in Super Bowl history. Jones' two kickoff return touchdowns led the NFL, and he was also tops in the league in yards per touch, at 18.1. He was second in the NFL in yards per kick return (30.1) and fourth in kick return yards with 1,16. Jones has eight career special teams touchdowns in five seasons, including playoffs.
Jones was also a dynamic threat in the passing game last year, averaging 13.5 yards a catch, scoring a touchdown, and also made arguably the biggest catch of the postseason against the Broncos. With the Ravens down 35-28 with under a minute remaining in regulation, Joe Flacco launched a pass that Jones hauled in for a 70-yard score that sent the game to overtime. He has 14 career touchdown catches.
The Houston Texans released Jones after they selected two wide receivers in last year's draft. Houston wound up with the worst special teams in the NFL, per footballoutsiders.com.
Jones is joining a storied group of former NFL players including Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Jason Taylor, Warren Sapp, Lawrence Taylor, Michael Irvin, Kurt Warner and most recently, Hines Ward to be on Dancing with the Stars. Smith took home the season three crown. Season 12, starring Jones, will premier on March 18th.
