David Wright Mets stats [VIDEO]: Captains Log: 'How did 'Face of MLB' fare in opening homestand?

New York Mets captain and third baseman David Wright is looking to have a big year now that the Mets have brought in Curtis Granderson to bat behind him and protect him in the order. Six games into the season and one Citi Field homestand in the books, we'll take a look into the Mets' captain's statistics through the first two series.

David Wright to thrive with Curtis Granderson in Mets lineup?

Wright played in all six games for the Mets as they were swept away by the Washington Nationals to kick off the season then won two straight games from the Cincinnati Reds before dropping the third game on Sunday and failing to complete the sweep.

Wright is hitting .238 (5-for-21) with a homer, three RBI, two walks and five runs. The Mets have struck out 61 times through the first six games --a franchise record --and Wright has contributed four of the strikeouts thus far this season.

Kyle Farnsworth to eventually take over as Mets closer?

The Mets captain hit .307 with 18 homers and 58 RBI last season for the Mets and will look to expand upon those numbers in 2014 while trying to lift the team to its first winning season since 2008 and hoping to help them make the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Wright said he believed the addition of Curtis Granderson should help him out but wouldn't automatically help increase his numbers.

"I'm a believer that obviously the guy hitting behind you can affect the way pitchers pitch to you," Wright said, according to Newsday. "But does it make things any easier? You still have to go out there and have a good at-bat and do the things you're supposed to do. It's not like you've got Curtis hitting behind you and things are just going to be easy. That's not the way it works."

Here at Sports World News, we will continue to take a look at Wright's year from time-to-time with the Captain's Log.
