Derek Jeter announced he plans on retiring Wednesday afternoon on Facebook, telling Yankees fans worldwide "I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 Season will be my last year playing professional baseball.
"For the last 20 years I've been completely focused on two goals; playing my best and helping the Yankees win. That means that for 365 days a year my every thought and action were geared toward that goal. It's now time for something new."
Jeter accomplished his goal, busting past the 3,000-hit barrier to compile 3,316 heading into this final season. He's made 13 All-Star Game appearances, won five Gold Gloves, five Silver Sluggers, and a Rookie of the Year award. He was a leader on five World Series winning clubs, and made it to seven total World Series, all while wearing pinstripes.
