WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena has battled back from his fair share of injuries throughout his decade in the WWE, and the Cenation leader spoke to Fox Business Monday about the prospects of possibly retiring, while not specifying exactly how much he has left in him.
"A lot of these athletes that are married to their sport think this is going to last forever," Cena said on the program, according to Wrestlingheadlines.com. "Then they blow out an ACL, they look around when they're 35 or 36 and their career is coming to an end and they act like the income stream is going to continue."
Cena revealed to Fox Business that he made a pact with himself to gracefully walk away from the WWE when he feels like he can't keep up with the young talent anymore but he wouldn't say how close he actually was to retiring. Cena talked about professional athletes winding down their careers and said that he knows that his time in the spotlight in the WWE has an expiration date.
Cena also noted, according to Wrestlingheadlines.com, that his character generates $100 million for the WWE per year.
Cena's latest injury was a torn triceps and distended elbow, which required surgery in August and was slated to sideline the face of the WWE until January, but Cena was able to vigorously rehab and return at the WWE's Hell in a Cell pay-per-view in October where he unseated Alberto Del Rio as the World Heavyweight Champion in his first match back.
Cena again discarded Del Rio at the WWE's Survivor Series pay-per-view last Sunday night in defense of the title, and now looks ahead to the TLC pay-per-view where he will take on WWE Champion Randy Orton in a tables, ladders and chairs match with both titles up for grabs on Dec. 15 at the Toyota Center in Houston.
Cena recently spoke about winning the World Heavyweight Championship and trying to bring some prestige to it.
"This is not taken as a shot of disrespect to anyone who has held the title before me, but it's now viewed as a second-tier championship, Cena told NOLA.com earlier this month."[Defending it at WrestleMania 30] will truly put a stamp on making it the real deal. I want the WWE universe to realize that it's not a second-tier championship. It should be treated with as much respect as the WWE title."
Cena is an 11-time WWE Champion and three-time World Heavyweight Champion, and while he discussed his career winding down, it doesn't seem like Cena's tenure as the face of the WWE will be ending anytime soon.
