Cain Velasquez Next Fight: Jon Jones Looking To Challenge For Heavyweight Title? [VIDEO]

After conquering Junior Dos Santos and apparently closing the door on one of UFC's better rivalries, Cain Velasquez may be set up for a superfight in 2014. Interestingly enough, the man he may wind up facing isn't even in his division.

Light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, the pound-for-pound best fighter in mixed martial arts is making noise about moving up in weight and taking on Velasquez. Jones has ruthlessly dominated the light heavyweight division, a weight class littered with challengers who are advancing in age.

Jones didn't use that as a reasoning for wanting to fight Velasquez though, instead painting the possible move as an exciting challenge. "I think that the UFC light heavyweight division is in a great, healthy state," Jones said to MMAJunkie.com. "I think that there's always going to be new competition. I think that there are guys right now that we don't even know exist that are working their way up. There's going to be tons of new competition for me, and really, styles make matchups."

He highlighted his tough matchup with Alexander Gustafsson, who took Jones the distance, as an example. "(With) the Gustafsson fight, nobody thought it would be even close, but look what happened: The guy scarred me permanently in the face," Jones said. "I've learned to not think that I've cleared any division and to respect every style, every fighter."

Still, Jones has his eye on a move up. A jump to heavyweight was basically inevitable; Jones already has a freakish body type for the 205-lb. division. "I think that's going to happen in the next two years," he said. "I'll go up to heavyweight permanently. I'm looking to take a super fight sooner or later, within the next year."

Who better to face in a superfight than the heavyweight champion? "I've really been thinking about me and Cain Velasquez going at it. I think that would be huge for the sport. He's definitely the toughest guy in the division and he's not that big, so I think it would be a really entertaining fight. So don't be surprised if you see that sooner or later."
