Facing for the first time in a fight dubbed as 'Fight of the Century,' Floyd Mayweather, Jr.(49-0, 26 KOs) defeated Manny Pacquiao (59-6,38 KOs) in a bout that does not seemed to live up to its moniker. Pacquiao lost on the judges' scorecards via unanimous decision but there are prominent people in the boxing community who thought Pacquiao did enough to win. For one, Evander Holyfield, had sung the same tune as the Filipino fighting senator himself when Pacquiao exclaimed "I thought I won the fight," during a post-fight interview. A recent and relatively similar line of thought came from Buster Douglas according to a report on boxingscene.
Buster Douglas is best remembered for having accomplished what can be considered as the greatest upset win in entire boxing history. Twenty six years ago, in Feb. 1990, Duoglas administered on no other than Mike Tyson a world-shocking knockout punch. Duoglas reported to the fight venue in Tokyo, Japan a 42-1 underdog.
Unlike Evander Holyfield, though, Buster Duoglas gave his nod to Floyd Mayweather in the first fight but was clear in his very recent statement Manny Pacquiao has what it takes to reverse the outcome of the first fight should a rematch takes place. In the immediate aftermath of the fight that eclipsed all other fights in history in terms of revenue, Manny Pacquiao and his team made a further case for a rematch, albeit not immediate, on the account of a shoulder injury suffered by the Filipino champ even before the fight.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. decided to call it a day after beating Andre Berto. For his part, after winning the 3rd Timothy Bradley fight, Manny Pacquiao followed suit in order to focus on his bid for a senatorial seat during the 2016 May National Elections in his native Philippines, thus clouding the chances for a rematch.
Manny Pacquiao, however, exited retirement not long after and captured the WBO world welterweight crown of Jessie Vargas last Nov. 2016 at the Thomas and Mack Center, Paradise, Nevada, USA. He will most likely fight next in Australia against local fighter Jeff Horn. Floyd Mayweather on the other hand is recently making noise about him re-entering boxing again but not because of his Filipino adversary. This present scenario, however, can be regarded as a step closer toward a second edition of the 'Fight of the Century.' Should it materialize, a healthy and more confident Pacquiao the second time around might at the end of the day empower Buster Douglas to exclaim "I told you so."
