Today at 1:00 p.m. ET the white-hot Carolina Panthers (7-3), winners of five consecutive games, will head to South Beach and take the field against the Miami Dolphins (5-5) who managed a victory last week in the face of the NFL's biggest scandal this year. Watch the game on CBS or live stream it here; Panthers fans can listen to the action on WBT 1110 AM, while Dolphins fans can hear the game on 560 WQAM.
The Panthers have pulled off several impressive victories this season, forcing NFL observers to take them very seriously as a threat to make hay in the postseason. The main reason for their surge to the top of the NFL is the play of quarterback Cam Newton, finally harnessing all his gifts into a complete package.
"Cam did the things he needed to do in terms of putting us in position to win that football game," head coach Ron Rivera said of Newton's performance last Monday. "He made a lot of great decisions and made some really great throws. I think that had a lot to do with his maturing that we have talked about all along."
Despite all the praise he's receiving, Newton has shown maturity by continuing to deflect it away from himself and onto his strong supporting cast. "It's not about me," Newton said. "People want to keep making it about myself and the plays that I made. I couldn't have done it without the guys that gave me the opportunity to make the play. It's not a one-man show, by far."
The Panthers alone would be tough enough to handle, but the Fins also are battling the massive shadow cast by the bullying allegations against popular lineman Richie Incognito. "No one could have predicted all these things that happened," said cornerback Brent Grimes. "We've just got to keep playing hard and not pay any attention to any distractions that might be out there."
