Scanning across recent swirl of news releases it would easily emerge that the potential Floyd Mayweather, Jr. - Conor McGregor clash is going to come inevitably.
Dana White, the sitting UFC president has expressed his intention to allow McGregor to face Mayweather in a boxing ring. There are prominent people however who are not sold out to what are stated in the news. For one, Oscar dela Hoya is not convinced the bout is going to happen after all.
Oscar dela Hoya is better known today as the owner of Golden Boy Promotions, a promotional company which has already gotten as big as Top Rank Promotions. But the former Olympian who won gold medal for the US boxing team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was a former five division world champion who used to be the boxing cash cow for so many years. In his advanced years as a boxer he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr., in 2007, but lost via split decision.
Today as a promoter, whenever Oscar dela Hoya speaks about the fight business the world likes to listen. About the potential megafight pitting Floyd Mayweather, Jr., certainly one of the greatest practitioners of boxing, and Conor McGregor, today's biggest star of UFC, Oscar dela Hoya apparently running counter to what seemed to be the trend argued that the proposed Mayweather-McGregor clash is bound to remain forever in the list of fantasy fights.
Oscar dela Hoya argued the moment Conor McGregor loses and gets humiliated, which is certainly possible because of him fighting in an unfamiliar terrain and directly going up against a resident fighter who excelled in defence, by Floyd Mayweather, Jr., is disastrous to the UFC Company. There will be more money at stake than what is to be gained in a Mayweather fight, the famed promoter added.
Oscar dela Hoya has no objection about Floyd Mayweather coming out of retirement. But he suggested Mayweather should fight Canelo Alvarez instead albeit at heavier weight class of 160lbs. The 26-year-old Alvarez is a home-grown Mexican Golden Boy fighter. Via majority decision Floyd Mayweather, Jr., 40, defeated Canelo Alvarez in their first meeting in 2013. But at a catchweight of 152 lbs which was favourable to the Grand Rapids, Michigan native.
