After having his homecoming to Indianapolis spoiled last week and getting handed his first loss of the season, Peyton Manning is looking to spoil Redskin coach Mike Shanahan's return to Denver this afternoon.
In a rare loss for Manning and the Broncos in a 39-33 result against the Colts last week, the team's string of 17-straight victories in the regular season was snapped. Manning has had a great year despite the loss suffered last week, as he's led the league in completions by converting on 207 of 289 passes (71.6%) for a league-leading 2,565 yards and an NFL-best 25 touchdowns while only throwing three interceptions through seven games.
Manning was held out of practice earlier this week for what the team called a minor ankle injury, and he and coach John Fox were mostly mum on the injury. He's expected to be fine this afternoon.
Mike Shanahan, who coached the Broncos for 14 years and led the franchise to its only two Super Bowl championships, is excited to return to Denver.
"I am looking forward to going back to Denver," Shanahan told ESPN. "It's been home for me. A lot of great friends still there. It's just something you look forward to."
Shanahan knows it won't be easy facing an explosive Denver offense which leads the NFL with an average of 469.3 yards per game.
Running back Knowshon Moreno leads the NFL with eight rushing touchdowns while also carrying the ball for 413 yards on 95 attempts.
Washington is coming off of a game where it scored its most points since 2005 in a 45-41 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 7 that saw the team get its rushing game going, as it ran for over 200 yards.
Quarterback Robert Griffin III is 143-for-238 (60.1%) for 1,746 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions thus far this season while rushing for 233 yards on 38 attempts without reaching the end zone. He rushed for 84 yards on 11 carries against the Bears last week.
One of Griffin's favorite targets has been rookie tight end Jordan Reed, who he connected with nine times for 134 yards and a score last week.
Manning's got plenty of weapons himself, as receivers Wes Welker and Julius Thomas are tied atop the league with eight touchdown receptions each and Eric Decker ranks second in the league with 627 receiving yards while Demaryius Thomas is tied for fourth with 610.
The Broncos look to bounce back after their first loss of the season while Mike Shanahan hopes his Redskins give him a good homecoming in Denver when these two teams go head-to-head this afternoon.
