Tonight at 8:07 p.m. the October Classic kicks off between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston. The Red Sox have home field advantage, which means more of David Ortiz at designated hitter, but the Cardinals get to kick the Series off with Adam Wainwright on the mound. They will also have the luxury of slotting Allen Craig, who has been out since early September due to injury, in at DH while keeping the mashing Matt Carpenter at first base. "I feel like I'm in a good spot," Craig said.
The Cardinals and Red Sox have a long history that recalls Stan "The Man" Musial's exploits as well as Carl Yastrzemski's. More recently, the Red Sox topped St. Louis to win the 2004 World Series, their first in 86 years. "Obviously I'm aware of the history of the two teams," Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury said. "Once the first pitch happens, all that goes out the window."
Mike Matheny, the current manager of the Cardinals, was the starter in that Fall Classic. His backup was Yadier Molina. "Some of us have some pretty bad memories of being here in 2004, and we're looking to kind of right that ship," Matheny said.
Now Molina is the star catcher, and he hopes to put his own stamp on the proceedings this time around. "It's fun to be part of this history, to be here in Fenway Park, to be part of this Series against Boston," Molina said.
Yadi also commented on the effects of playing in Boston with its unique feel and dimensions. "It's different to play here overall. Playing defense, offense, pitching. It's different, but at the same time it's fun," he said.
Left-hander Jon Lester will toe the rubber for Boston opposite Wainwright.
