The Houston Texans have parted ways with three rookies, Sam Montgomery, Cierre Wood, and Willie Jefferson after the trio was allegedly busted smoking marijuana in the team hotel.
Jefferson's agent Chad Cannon is denying the accusations on behalf of his client, and said he's considering filing a grievance against the organization. "We're discussing the possibility of filing a grievance," Cannon said. "I need to be in touch with them and really figure if that's the best route to take." According to Cannon, the players were smoking a cigar, and no illegal drugs were involved.
Texans coach Gary Kubiak addressed the issue during a Monday press conference but was fairly tight-lipped about the entire ordeal. "I won't discuss team rules and those type of things," Kubiak said. "I'll make decisions based on a body of work in everything I do. I've got five months of work invested in those three young men and made a decision today to move forward."
The booting of these players affected Houston on the field; Wood was the team's third-string running back, and would have been thrust into action on Sunday after Arian Foster aggravated his hamstring injury, and backup Ben Tate also got injured.
"I don't understand why they did it," Texans outside linebacker Brooks Reed said. "They had the opportunity of their lives and they just kind of threw it away. I don't have too much to say about it. It's really unfortunate. We lost a lot of depth for that game. They were great players and they had a lot of potential. We're just going to find more guys that are more dedicated to the cause."
Montgomery was Houston's third-round pick but hasn't played in any games yet. He showed up at camp out of shape, then suffered an injury. Upon returning he was still out of shape and hasn't seen the field. Jefferson has a slightly checkered past as well. According to ESPN, he began his collegiate career at Baylor, but was thrown off the team and finished out his NCAA eligibility at Stephen F. Austin.
