Holly Holm knocking out Ronda Rousey was the biggest upset of 2015, and Rousey is not on the path to avenging that defeat, and re-establishing herself as the queen of women’s mixed martial arts. The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion is set to host “Saturday Night Live” on Jan. 23, which should do wonders for her budding career in Hollywood.
It doesn’t bring her any closer to taking down Holm, however.
Cyborg To UFC More Likely If Holly Holm Remains Champion
When they squared off at UFC 194, Holm’s striking was much superior to Rousey’s ability to defend it. Most felt Rousey’s ground game would do Holm in, but Holm’s boxing kept Rousey at bay until she was eventually knocked out. Rousey was not in Holm’s league in that respect, and she will need extensive work to bring those skills up to par. Rousey’s still medically not cleared to resume training in the gym, but the SNL gig shows her mind is on her celebrity, and not her craft.
2016 is going to a busy year for Rousey as an actress. She’s set to star in a remake of Patrick Swayze’s iconic “Roadhouse,” as well as a film based on her best-selling autobiography. Properly training for a fighter like Holm is not something Rousey should be trying to fit into her schedule, not when Holm is dedicating all her time and energy to preparing to cement her place in UFC history. Rousey needs to be all-in, or not fight at all – and that is an option, albeit an unlikely one.
Gina Carano: Dana White Thought Rousey Would Crush Holm
Rousey has said she will return to the octagon, and UFC president Dana White has essentially put the women’s bantamweight division on pause while Rousey heals, so they have to hope that Rousey has at least one more bout in her. The UFC has targeted July 9 for the rematch.
