Floyd "Money" Mayweather may have obliterated Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on September 14th, but that didn't dim the 23-year-old's star in the eyes of boxing fans. He is still a power-punching, championship-caliber fighter who will draw Mexican fans to fights.
He was clearly not ready for Mayweather's wizardry, however, and could use an entertaining fight that allows him to showcase his skills, while still being challenged. Enter Miguel Cotto, fresh off a sub-three round demolition of Delvin Rodriguez.
Prior to the Rodriguez fight, Cotto was seen as a potentially shot fighter playing out the string of a storied and lucrative career. Cotto hooked up with Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach for this fight, however, and he brought out the old, aggressive Cotto.
Rodriguez was pelted with blistering body shots, and eventually finished off by a left hook to the face. With the dominant win, Cotto re-established himself as a contender and candidate for major pay-per-view fights. Cotto could be the perfect opponent for Alvarez.
The Mexican vs. Puerto Rican warriors angle can be played, as can Cotto's status as a boxing vanguard able to both box and brawl. The last time Mayweather seemed challenged at was against Cotto, who bloodied Floyd's nose.
A huge roadblock could be relations between Bob Arum and Golden Boy Promotions, though. Cotto is technically a free agent, but has a great relationship with Todd duBoef, who often schedules HBO bouts. Also, Golden Boy may be miffed at Arum for recent comments about Alvarez also being a "free agent."
Alvarez released a statement to the contrary. "I am very happy with Golden Boy Promotions," Alvarez said. "I'm scheduled to travel next week to Los Angeles to meet with Richard Schaefer and Eric Gomez for a meeting that we hold after each fight. I have a contract with Golden Boy Promotions with which I am very happy. Any event or matter that points to the contrary is false."
