It's hard to say which is the bigger surprise three weeks into the 2013 NFL season-that the New York Giants (0-3) are winless, or the Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) are undefeated. Today at 1:00 the Giants will try to save their season in a game that can be live streamed here; Giants fans can hear the game on 101.9 WFAN FM, while Chiefs fans can catch the radio broadcast on KCFX 101.1.
New coach Andy Reid has stressed the importance of ball control since taking over the Chiefs, who only won two games in 2012. "Points and turnovers are the two most important things that you have as a football team," Reid said. "If you turn the ball over you're losing football games, and if your takeaway ratio is high then normally you're winning. Those are two important stat points."
Enter Alex Smith, who was cast aside in San Francisco in favor of Colin Kaepernick. Smith has not thrown a single interception this season; his Sunday counterpart, Eli Manning, leads the NFL right now with eight.
Manning has been unlucky at times, but places the blame for the team's abysmal start on every player in the locker room.
"We have to play better," Manning said. "We have to have greater energy, greater enthusiasm, play better, better technique, decision making. There are some plays out there that we left on the field, and sometimes we just got flat-out beat. It's not a big surprise what we have to do to fix it. We just have to go out there and play better football."
Manning was sacked nearly 10 times last week, and star wideout Hakeem Nicks expressed his frustration at a zero-catch afternoon by saying he couldn't "throw himself the ball."
Defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins tried to squash any disharmony lingering from last week's beating.
"Once you get to pointing the finger, you get that cancer in the locker room like that, it can fall apart easy," Jenkins said. "You can't do that. This is a team game. We come into every week, every game, as a team, we leave every game as a team. We win or lose as a team together."
