Following a 6-4 San Francisco Giants victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday night, a brawl broke out among fans of both teams resulting in the stabbing death of a Dodgers fan, 24-year-old Jonathan Denver.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr has confirmed that two men have been arrested in connection with the stabbing, but refused to provide any additional information regarding the pair of suspects. The Los Angeles Times reports that in fact, three suspects have been detained.
The police have said the fight was between two groups of men, and have not confirmed whether or not Denver's Dodgers attire sparked the violent incident. KGO-TV, however, is saying the fracas broke out after comments were made about Denver's clothes. The stabbing happened at around 11:30 p.m. Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter stressed to media members that the fight took place several blocks away from AT&T Park. Police say the knifing happened on 3rd and Harrison street, approximately four blocks away from AT&T Park.
It has been a rough place to be during Giants-Dodgers games. In Los Angeles' 2011 home opener Bryan Stow, a Giants fan, was nearly beaten to death by two Dodgers fans in the parking lot of Dodgers Stadium. Stow sustained traumatic brain injuries during the attack.
A mere four days ago, following a San Francisco 49ers home game in which they lost 27-7 to the Indianapolis Colts, a teenager was beaten at Candlestick Park despite extra security being in place at the stadium. According to ESPN, during a preseason tilt two years ago Candlestick Park was witness to two shootings and several beatings.
This news is just the latest regarding fan injuries at or near ballparks. On August 12th, an Atlanta Braves fan named Ronald Lee Homer Jr. fell 85 feet to his death over a railing. Police later ruled Homer's demise as a suicide.
