On Thursday night the San Francisco 49ers will try to right their wayward ship on the road against the St. Louis Rams in what is an important divisional game for both teams. Fans can watch the game for free on NFL Network, or live stream it here free. 49ers fans can listen to the game on KNBR, while Rams fans can hear the broadcast on 101 ESPN.
Colin Kaepernick was terse in his postgame press conference following Sunday's 27-7 drubbing at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts, who were on the road. "I have to be better," Kaepernick said with his head down.
Part of Kaepernick's struggles can be attributed to the absence of wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham, both of whom will be out for significant lengths of time, but that didn't factor in San Francisco's Week 1 beating of the Green Bay Packers.
Tight end Vernon Davis missed Sunday's game as well, but that still can't explain why Kaepernick mustered just 150 total passing yards, and completed two passes in the entire first half.
After blowing out the Packers, the 49ers have lost their last two games by a combined 46 points, with Kaepernick completing under 50 percent of his passes in both. Against Indianapolis, he was shut down on the ground too, chewing up a paltry 20 yards on seven rushes.
The Seattle Seahawks have leapt out to a 3-0 start, and are threatening to bury the 49ers in the standings if they sustain another loss, so Kaepernick will need to figure things out in a hurry. He will need help from offensive wizard and head coach Jim Harbaugh in that regard, but one way to offer help is getting back to the ground game.
Frank Gore is averaging just 13 rushes per game, after spearheading one of the NFL's most prolific ground attacks one year ago. Establishing Gore, then re-introducing the lethal read-option may be the trick to get the cherry red and gold back on track.
