Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s “little brother” Adrien “The Problem” Broner is ready to strike out on his own it seems. Broner, once mocked for doing a poor imitation of Mayweather as he climbed boxing’s ladder, has gone on the internet and set fire to his relationship with boxing’s pay-per-view king.
Broner, offended by Mayweather denigrating his recent victory over Khabib Allakhverdiev for the vacant WBA junior welterweight title, lit into his mentor for not returning his calls, contradicting his own advice, and being fake to his stable of “Money Team” fighters.
Three Opponents Adrien Broner Should Fight Next
“How the f**k can you downplay something that I did?” Broner asked. I don’t care if I fought your assistant in my last fight. I will go in the history books as a four-time world champion in four weight classes.”
Broner also said Mayweather is a hypocrite for saying he shouldn’t be proud to fight for a title coming off a loss, against a little-known opponent who also lost his last fight.
Shawn Porter Finally Taught 'The Problem' Some Humility
“I learned this s**t from you right? You told me this out your own mouth. You said ‘we are in boxing to get the biggest reward for less punishment.’ That’s what you told me. So for you to go talk about one of my accomplishments, and downplay something that I did, that’s f**ked up.”

Broner also took a blowtorch to Mayweather and how he deals with his “Money Team” stable of fighters. Mayweather has brought up journeyman Ashley Theophane as a possible opponent for Broner even though Broner is a much bigger name. Broner said Mayweather “doesn’t f**k with them [TMT fighters] for real,” and wanted Broner to be a part of his team.

There have been bubbling tensions between Broner and Mayweather since Broner’s star fell after two losses against championship-caliber opposition. He rebounded nicely from losing to Shawn Porter earlier this year by earning a TKO of Allakhverdiev for the vacant WBA belt at 140 pounds. While Broner’s hurt might be real, it’s also possible he is trying to set the stage for a potential fight vs. Mayweather if the pound-for-pound king ends his retirement and tries to earn a 50th win.
Broner will need to rack up more wins, and against better opponents than Allakhverdiev, to earn that shot, but his personality is just the type to re-ignite interest in a Mayweather fight. In fact, Broner’s brash persona, mixed with his failures in the ring, might be a formula to make Mayweather come off like the babyface in the situation.
Mayweather vs. Broner is very unlikely, but it just may be an easier sell than Mayweather vs. any of the other low-profile welterweights in the hunt.
